Since the beginning of the 1980's the Austian market for solar water heaters has seen a constant growth. Not only concerns over energy prices, but also grants from the provincial and federal governments were decisive factors for this boom.
In recent years further considerable growth has been achieved. The basis for this was an increasing environmental awareness and growing confidence in solar technology due to the introduction of improved, cheaper systems. Although one can imagine more favourable sites in Europe in terms of climate Austria leads the European per capita solar statistics with an installed collector area of approximately 290m² per 1000 inhabitants at the end of 2001.
Austria's equally pioneering role when it comes to technology can be seen from the export share of sun collectors of more than 100% in relation to the volume of own brands in 2001.
